How Studying My Major Changed the Way I See the World

I originally thought that studying accounting and economics consisted of mathematical operations and number-based processing. This belief made sense to me when I first encountered it. The main function of accounting and economics appeared to be business transaction documentation and financial system operation for government agencies. However, as I advanced in my accounting and economics studies, I realized that these disciplines revealed information that extended beyond monetary outcomes. These texts explained how communities function, showing individual responses to established systems and their associated rules and reward structures.
Through accounting, I learned how organizations make decisions based on limited resources and measured outcomes. Financial statements revealed that numbers represent business decisions, which show how organizations allocate their resources instead of indicating their financial performance. Economics expanded this understanding by explaining how individuals and groups respond to incentives, constraints, and uncertainty. I witnessed these same patterns throughout my daily life at schools, work settings, and official government institutions. The theories I studied helped me understand why certain social outcomes occur even when intentions appear positive.
My understanding of social structures evolved through my academic work in these subjects. The research findings demonstrated that these concepts function at different levels, including business operations and government activities, and also affect individual choice and collective conduct. The tools I learned from accounting and economics allowed me to study situations that went beyond their initial appearance. The assessment of society fails because it does not possess fundamental knowledge about the systems that influence human behavioral choices. My major education transformed my ability to see the world, and it enhanced my skills for studying social structures through data analysis and human conduct patterns.
